FAST CASUAL Americans are spending more on food each year and may soon spend more on dining out than groceries. Although the economy in 2018 is rebounding, people are looking for value; especially value meals of fast-food restaurants that put renewed pressure on other quick-service eateries as they all fight for the same food dollars. The most likely explanation is that low- and middle-income consumers continue to feel the pressures of stagnant wage growth, higher housing costs and rising healthcare expenses.
